10 Indie Games that make me say “now this is Podracing.. emm Indie Gaming”
Indie Showcase, Top 10 PC

Indie games are a mixed lot, and while some are just as good as any AAA title, some are utter tripe that are a disgrace to your gaming life, whatever the outcome all indie games share a common feeling of being made by a small/new team.

This list will look at just 10 of these indie games, a smorgasbord of good and bad for your enjoyment!

1) ClusterTruck

ClusterTrucks reminds me of the type of game that could have been safely made anytime in the last 20 years, its not ground breaking, but it is incredibly fun with delightfully simple graphics and a very fun concept, and while its not the type of game you would put serious hours into, the high speed jumping focused gameplay offers a nice change of pace on days when you feel like burning off some adrenaline.

2) Game Tycoon 1.5

90% of people who reviewed this game hate it, and frankly in this rare case the negative reviewers are right, the game is total and utter tripe, with awful “supermarket £1 pc game” graphics, ghastly music, weirdly sexual & poorly rendered female npcs, and an overall feeling of lacking polish, the only enjoyment i had from this game was hitting uninstall, it was well and truly awful.

Go play game Dev Tycoon instead.

3) Game Dev Tycoon

Game Dev tycoon is a truly great indie title, while the graphics are simple and the UI basic, the gameplay is fun and makes you want to play more, unlike games like Game Tycoon, Game Dev tycoon feels like it was loved by its developers, and that love shows in the care and attention to detail they put into the product, I played the game for dozens of hours before coming to steam and hope to give it another playthrough someday soon.

4) Infectonator: Survivors

Now i must confess i don’t normally enjoy modern pixel art games, I find them lacking the nostalgia of the original pixel art gems and often fee to me like a lazy low budget copout, however in the case of Infectonator: Survivors i was pleasantly surprised the game-play is smooth, the 2D and pixel are are equally gorgeous, the controls are fluid and game-play is near perfect for the genre, I enjoyed every aspect of the game and will add it to my game rotation, a rare honour for an indie title, and a near unheard of one for a pixel art title.

5) The Last Federation

The Last federation is an odd mix of crappy arcade shooter and really solid diplomacy, while i wish the space shooter elements were more like space rangers, the incredibly well thought out diplomacy aspects of the game still give this game a very solid B+ in my book, a solid indie title with basic graphics and simple yet addictive gameplay.

PS not sure why the only playable race in base game is a hydra though.lol

6) Space Rangers! (Removed from steam)

Space Rangers is very much your Triple-I quality indie from the early 10’s and that ok, Games of this quality and era still stand up well today and Space rangers is no exception, with very enjoyable combat, decent but ageing graphics and a wide and diverse universe that feels alive and dynamic, you will find dozens of hours of enjoyment per play-through as you upgrade your ships and build a fleet to eventually save the universe.

Removed from Steam in 2013 and replaced with Space Rangers HD: A War Apart, original however offers slightly different mechanics to Space Rangers HD: A War Apart.

7) Space Rangers 2 (Removed from steam)

Here is what i said about Space Rangers.

All that holds up, and in fact is built upon, the addiction of ground based missions may appeal to some, but i personally found them tedious, the story and scale of the treat facing the galaxy has been ramped up and overall its a fantastic sequel to a superb game.

Removed from Steam in 2013 and replaced with Space Rangers HD: A War Apart, original however offers slightly different mechanics to Space Rangers HD: A War Apart.

8) Towers Unite

The game is itself is rather simplistic in design and the art style wont appeal to everyone, its a mix of zany and realistic that doesn’t really mesh well, that being said its the only game of its kind on the PC that allows friends and strangers to hop into various party games and a lot of the games are really fun, from the Casino to mini golf, all of it plays well, and the ability to customise your avatar and apartment with items and furnishings you won/.purchased with winnings, add a a level of progression to what would be an otherwise one and done game, the community however is not always the nicest and the few times i played every lobby had trolls who followed people about yelling and being a nuisance.

9) Windward

This game brought back sweet memories of Sid Meier’s Pirates and games like Port Royale, with gorgeously crisp 2D art and solid retro mechanics, the developers should feel proud of their work, Its the type of game I find myself wanting to play “just a few minutes more”, and as i said previously indie games rarely do that for me.

A fantastic homage to the Pc games of the early 00’s, any fan of Sid Meier’s Pirates or Port Royale will enjoy this, to a smaller extent fans of Space rangers will also find this game and its mechanics similar and welcoming.

10) Sheltered

Now i will make 2 statements about sheltered from the start.

1) The game is well made, well thought out, well designed and clearly well loved by the developers, a labor of love without question.

2) I simply didn’t like it, however just because I personally didn’t like it, didn’t mean that its a bad game, its just not my cup of tea.

The art style is very retro and gorgeous, the concept I found flawless, and even the atmosphere was perfection, the moral choices and feeling of gravity were both well executed, the random nature of each play through gives infinate replay value, and yet for some reason despite all this for me it didn’t click, so while its a solid game and one many will enjoy, its certainly not a game for everyone, and I suggest watching some game play to decide for yourself.
