Review: Anthem: Bioware hasnt changed, we have.

Ok, that is a slight exaggeration, everyone and everything changes, but the massive shift in the relationship between gamers and Bioware is mostly the fault of Gamers.

Gamers have become Cheap.

Its true, while the price of everything from Bread to cream cheese has gone up over the years game companies are expected to keep their prices below $40 or be called “greedy”.

Yet these same gamers will spend $8 at Starbucks on a cup of caffeine and sugar and $4 a can on an energy drink, but act as if developers asked to kick their mother when charging $25 for a season pass or selling $5 post-launch DLC.

Gamers have become Ridiculous.

Pay to Win games are a blight on gaming, and actual Pay to Win games should be purged from existence yet gamers have cried wolf so often with this phrase no one cares anymore, having a million cosmetic skins costing $100 wouldn’t suddenly make a game pay to win, having 267 pages of DLC in the store wouldn’t suddenly make the game Pay to Win unless that DLC gave a direct competitive advantage over non paying players.

DLC giving you starting weapons and double HP in a Battle Royale, for example, would be pay to win, the option to look like a panda is not.

Gamers have become Entitled.

In 1990-2010 if a game launched with 5 alternative skins/outfits we would be thrilled, yet now if a game launches with 30 alternative skins in the base game, and 20 more in a cash shop, Gamers REEE like the world is ending, demanding all extra content free, be the adult you claim to be

  1. Buy it or better yet
  2. Don’t Buy It and accept you do not need to own every outfit/skin in the game.

The same applies for loot boxes, I have used free in-game currency on some boxes when bored, yet I could just as easily not ever open a loot box, if you feel the need to, the fault is yours and yours alone, most of us can ignore loot boxes entirely/use in moderation.

Gamers have become Petty.

We get it you hate Ubisoft, Epic, EA, Bethesda, Activision, Blizzard and every company outside Valve, you all foam at the mouth hoping their releases fail, you all refuse to buy games and even pirate said games simply because x years ago they did something you didn’t like.

Battlefront 2 was not perfect at launch, the card system was mindlessly over-complicated and pointless, yet it wasn’t pay to win, I never even opened my starter packs, let alone the flood of card packs and boxes I earned by playing matches, until I had thousands of kills under my belt, finishing top 3 players in countless matches against players with high-rank cards.

The rage over Star Cards was a placebo, Reddit told gamers they needed these cards to win, and Dice was villainised for including them, Was the system stupid? Yep very, was it pay to win? Nope, not at all.

Developers have their part to play.

Developers have made some cruddy mistakes Rainbow Siege 6 and For Honor both launched with awful peer2peer matchmaking, people were rightly upset.

Both Rainbow Siege 6 and For Honor now have massive player bases and dedicated servers.

Gamer’s can now set aside your hate, the developers have corrected the mistakes, and holding onto hate so long is not only stupid but unhealthy.

Nexon is the king of cruddy mistakes, yet all things Nexon, including sub-companies and even developers who have little choice in a publisher are the target of that hate, Nexon needs to change its ways.

Mistakes aside, the blind hatred aimed at them is no better than the mistakes they have made.

Fallout 76 launched far too content light for a game that aspires to continue the Fallout legacy, yet Bethesda has continued to fix and improve the game, cash shop fridges (which are worse than in-game made equivalents) aside, the game has made leaps and bounds, and the upcoming NPC update will bring this game on par with the best Fallout has to offer.

Look at No Mans Sky and Final Fantasy 14, both sucked so bad at launch it was almost comic, in the case of No Mans Sky the developers bald-faced lied to us about what features would be included, and yet both games now have turned around and become even better than they were initially promised to be.

Do your Part!

Developers, when they screw up need to be held accountable but remember that just because YOU think something should be a certain way, doesn’t mean it should be.

Present constructive negative feedback without rampaging like a clan of feral apes, act mature, concise and intelligent, and you will make a lot more progress with the developers and fellow players, than if you act like the king of nerd rage.

Is Anthem Perfect?

Anthem is far from perfect, its endgame is not fleshed out enough (a fault which haunted the early years of Swtor), yet like Swtor Anthem isn’t going anywhere, the core of the game is solid, enjoyable and 10 years ago we would have loved it, Bioware is making basically the same games it always has, the problem is we are now expecting too much bang for our buck, I recall Knight of the Old Republic as one of the best games I have ever played, yet it was janky, glitchy and the story lasted about 25 hours, I paid £44.99 for it at release and was very happy with my purchase

Most people who leave Anthem a negative or low scored review complain that after 60-80 hours the content dries up, Why is Kotor praised almost universally at 25 hours as a content-rich, and yet a game with 3x that called content sparse?

We have changed, and at times not for the better, Anthem isn’t perfect, but does a game have to be perfect to be good?

Is Anthem Good?

I was blown away by how fun Anthem was, the world pulled me in unlike anything since playing Kotor, Bioware still has the same magic it always did, and while I miss the elements of earlier Bioware games (companions, romance, branching paths), I love the world, the lore, the combat, animations, the world calls to me like few looter shooters, and while Destiny is one of my favourite games in the genre, I found Anthem’s lore far better and honestly more engrossing than anything Destiny offers, and I liked the Destiny lore.

Does Anthem have room for improvement?

If Anthem was marketed as a single-player RPG it would be in a solid place, and wouldn’t need much beyond further story, however since its a game as service, and wishes to compete with Destiny, it really needs to up its endgame content, with raids, dungeons, open-world group content and preferable a form of arena-based pvp.

I have faith Bioware will pull this around as Bethesda turned around Fallout 76, we need to be patient and continue to give constructive feedback both positive and negative.

Why Now?

Honestly, I pre-order so many games some slip through the cracks, and I wanted to give Bioware some time to work on improving the game before I gave my verdict, and I am glad I did, its a solid game that has a long way to go, but it is facing the right direction now and taking baby steps towards its eventual goal.

Worth a Play?

Its part of Origin access, so yes everyone should give it a try!, you may find out that *gasp* Reddit and Clickbaiting YouTubers were exaggerating all along.

Our Legacy

A few years ago gamers were finally getting good press, our charity fundraisers and social awareness a great change from the stereotype we were angry nerds, Between Epic Game Store hatred, and the war on cosmetic/skins we look worse than ever, whiny man-babies who are unable to think logically or reasonably, and lacked the ability to express opinions without resorting to full-on nerd rage.

Every major release this year had more haters hoping it failed that I have ever seen in my 25+ years of gaming, these haters were from within the very fandoms those games represented, it becomes cool to hate things, and that is just pitiful.
