Review: Payday 2 – An Uphill Struggle PC

The Elephant in the Room.

Payday 2 is a good game, the fact it maintains a hefty CCU of 25-35k throughout the day 6 years after release is a testament to its longevity and the dedication of its fanbase, that being said Starbreeze/Overkill is in bad shape, Overkills The Walking Dead was not a bad game, honestly with a little more time I could have become the best 4 player Zombie co-op game, Robert Kirkman’s decision to yank away The Walking Dead license did more to damage the public opinion of Skybound than it did the public image of Starbreeze, in no universe where the excellent series 9 and 10 of The Walking Dead exists despite the rather mediocre seasons 7 & 8 should Overkills The Walking Dead have been shuttered, it was equal if not better than season 7 & 8, and If given enough time would right itself just like Destiny 2, Rainbow Siege 6, and The Divison become far better products a year+ after release than at launch.

A Fools Hope.

Payday 2 is a good game with1 a solid userbase, but will that be enough to keep people paying and playing a 6+-year-old game for the next 18 months-2 years while Payday 3 is developed, Payday 3 needs to be perfect from the get-go, people have lost confidence in Starbreeze and their financial woes are known everywhere, with commercial failures like RAID and Overkills The Walking Dead their most recent ventures, the industry analysts, fans and I am sure even employees of Starbreeze/Overkill themselves are concerned the magic of Payday/Payday 2 may be at its end.

How Does it Play?

Payday 2 itself is a very decent Triple I/ A Title co-op shooter and one which is great to play with friends.

Playing with randoms is a mixed bag and every match I played, I was grouped with a mix of inpatient experts and awful players/trolls, who would shoot up everything in sight during forced stealth missions, failing failure.

The engine is ageing and the FPS aspects while “ok”, are dated compared to newer engines/games, and feels like taking a step back into the past.

There is a wide variety of masks, many of which are paid DLC, and Payday 2 has loads of DLC, the next two years look to be full of DLC also as Starbreeze does everything it can to stay afloat and save the jobs of those who remain at the diminished and struggling studio.

I wish Starbreeze/Overkill well, but the future won’t be an easy one and is in no way assured.

The fact Payday 2 resumed development will bring many players back. However, the fact DLC is now being sold despite assurances no more DLC would be coming, will undoubtedly offend some and I can only hope the new free features to the base game is enough to keep the userbase positive.
