Tembo, the Badass Elephant, is one of the most attractive Metroidvania available on the Game Pass, and a game that is suitable for the whole family.
Narratively speaking Tembo is an elephant that dresses and acts like Rambo, overall it’s a better Rambo game than the recent “Rambo: The Video Game” which possibly is the least creative title I have ever seen.
Good 90’s Vibe.
Gameplay consists of breaking walls, throwing your hefty frame around as a weapon, using your trunk as a hammer, and flying to rescue civilians who have become trapped by the evil phantom.
The gameplay is reminiscent of the 1990s Sonic the Hedgehog games, as a massive fan of that era, it was nice to see a modern game capture the gameplay mechanics of that era and expand upon then, instead of reinventing them entirely.
It’s nice to see the return of the end zone bosses, this was something I loved about the early Sonic games, and its great to see a modern platformer continue the tradition.
Memories of Summer of 2000
The summer of 2000 I badly hurt my knee playing basketball and spent an excessive amount of time watching Cartoon Network.
It was during this time I learned to appreciate the thick line art style which continues today to be the go-to for mass-produced animations (Gravity Falls, Spongebob Squarepants, Finas and Ferb etc.).
The art style used in Tembo, the Badass Elephant, is reminiscent of Cartoon Network or Disney XD and feels right for the genre and fans of Cartoon Network/Disney XD will immediately see the similarities and feel right at home.
Despite being in my 30s, I would love to see an animated movie or series about Tembo, it has the right mix of action and humour to keep audiences of all ages entertained.
Worth a Buy?
It’s a great game, with some fantastic puzzle and exploration elements; however, younger children & casual gamers may be frustrated that levels are locked away behind a score count.
I must confess to getting stuck a few times, and having to go back and regrind previous levels to find extra enemies to kill and civilians to rescue.
