The Best Dungeons to Farm in Vanilla World of Warcraft (Retail)

World of Warcraft has one thing in abundance, and that is dungeons and raids, while many of us have long ago outgrown these early adventures, some of them can serve you well still, by providing a great source of income from transmogs, twink gear, and crafting materials.

In this guide, we will look at all dungeons in Vanilla World of Warcraft (Levels 1-50), Dungeons are listed from highest to lowest GP/h (gold per hour). However, some lower-earning dungeons can provide far greater numbers of auctionable goods such as transmog and crafting materials.

Stockades

Time per Clear: 1.3 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 44g
Gold per Min: 34g
Farming PotentialExcellent

This is the fastest dungeon in vanilla Wow at 1.20 per run, a great run for those farming raw gold on a tight schedule, at 444g per 15 mins played, its the best GP/m dungeon farm in Vanilla wow.
While most of the loot is soulbound, it certainly drops a lot of it and most vendor for around 4-8g.

Overall, a fantastic run to kill time while you wait for something else.

Razorfen Downs

Time per Clear: 3.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 62g
Gold per Min: 21g
Farming PotentialExcellent

This is one of my favourite dungeons to date, it forces almost no backtracking, has decent mob density, drops a wide array of low/low mid-value transmogs, it can spawn 5+ chests per run and all this in under 3 minutes per run if you are new to it, and I was able to shave my later runs to 2.45 minutes making this one of the fastest runs and the second-highest GP/m dungeon farm in Vanilla WoW.

Scholomance

Time per Clear: 3.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 70g
Gold per Min: 20g
Farming PotentialExcellent

This run is pretty straightforward with an abundance of soulbound rare items, each being worth 3-8 gold on average, the run route itself is very straightforward and mostly consists of following the dungeon flow, and the third-highest GP/m dungeon farm in Vanilla WoW.

I also had two very nice drops, and 33 low-value greens, overall I feel its a dungeon worth farming once a week.

Transmog

  • 30 low to low-med value greens
  • 1 Dazzling Longsword
  • 1 Skeletal Shoulders

Craft Materials

  • 372 Silk Cloth.
  • 527 Mageweave Cloth

Razorfen Krual

Time per Clear: 4.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 67g
Gold per Min: 17g
Farming PotentialGood

This run was a dream come true, I have never had so many five-digit value items drop before in a single run, having found three pets and seven rare weapons in 10 runs.

Almost no backtracking or RP make this a great starter run for new farmers, a simple kill/loot/reset cycle that offers up a surprisingly good array of goodies including items like.

Transmog

  • Sword of Decay
  • Pysan’s Old Great Sword
  • Raincaller Vest
  • Ironweaver
  • Zealot Blade
  • 2 x Wood Frog
  • 1 x Tree Frog

  • Pattern: Swift Boots

Uldaman

Time per Clear: 3.3 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 54g
Gold per Min: 16g
Farming PotentialGood
This run is a simple affair once you memorise the route, I found it was possible to kill 5 of the bosses without backtracking, and many areas allowed large pulls.

I encountered no RP delays, and a wide array of humanoid mobs are great for those farming silk.

Transmog

  • 20 low-value Greens

Craft Materials

  • 609 Silk Cloth
  • 78 Mageweave Cloth
  • 22 Mystery Meat
  • 20 Solid Stone
  • 10 Deep rock Salt

  • 1 Schematic: Large Seafoam Charge

Sunken Temple

Time per Clear: 3.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 54g
Gold per Min: 15g
Farming PotentialGood

Sunken Temple was one of the strangest runs to date with almost no crafting materials dropping and an excessive amount of soul-bound items.

While relatively quick Sunken Temple is mediocre at best, the one high point was a single epic BoE drop, apart from that drops of any sort were very scarce and uninteresting.

Overall the item drop rate was so low, unlike most runs where I need to vendor soulbound and junk items after 4-5 runs, I was able to do all ten runs of Sunken temple and still have 17 slots left in my bags.

It’s not a run I would willingly do again, and overall felt a waste of time due to the poor concentration of loot dropping mobs.

Transmog

  • 1 Glowing Brightwood Staff
  • 10 Low/Low Mid Value Green BoE

Craft Materials

  • 143 Rune Cloth

Misc Loot

  • 2 Mithril Lockbox
  • 1 Formula: Enchant Weapon: Demonslaying

Scarlet Halls

Time per Clear: 3.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 45g
Gold per Min: 15g
Farming PotentialGood
I found this dungeon much better than Scarlet Monastery, with less backtracking and apart from a small forced RP scene with the first boss, its fast and straightforward kill/loot/reset loop.

I found that low/medium value green items dropped much more frequently, and some runs I received 6+ greens, however many were very low-value or bracers, and only 20+ were worth keeping from the roughly 40+ drops.

For those who want to grind for ultra-rare items, Scarlet Halls does have a few desirable items with a low drop rate, as it shares a loot table with Scarlet Monastery either of these runs (and the mobs outside the dungeons) give a small chance to drop big-ticket items such as Silver-Thread Robe, Bloodspiller, the Butcher, and Chesterfall Musket.

Transmog

  • 20+ Low/Medium Value Greens
  • The Butcher
  • Watchman Pauldrons

Craft Materials

  • 304 x Silk Cloth
  • 97 x Wool Cloth
  • 153 x Lean Wolf Flank
  • Assorted low-value single-digit craft mats.

Misc Loot

  • 2 x Heavy Bronze Lockbox
  • Plans: Silvered Bronze Leggings

Stratholme

Time per Clear: 6.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 76g
Gold per Min: 13g
Farming PotentialGood

This run is a simple affair once you memorise the route, I found it was possible to kill 6 of the bosses/mini-bosses without too much backtracking, and many areas allowed massive pulls, I found the drops to be overall higher per pull than any vanilla instance done to date, with 38 green transmogs and 1500ish craft materials.

I encountered no RP delays, and a wide array of humanoid/undead mobs are great for those farming Mageweave Cloth.

Transmog

  • 38 Low/Medium Value Greens

Craft Materials

  • 276 Silk Cloth
  • 1213 Mageweave Cloth
  • 5 Rune Cloth
  • 114 Nightcrawlers

Scarlet Monastery

Time per Clear: 3.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 47g
Gold per Min: 13g
Farming PotentialGood

This run has a fair bit of backtracking walking in circles to corral all the mobs, and honestly, the drops just aren’t that amazing or frequent for the number of humanoids you kill on an average run. However, the gold/silver per mob is decent, and its a nice source of silk.

One of the least enjoyable runs due to the backtracking and RP scenes, while its better than Shadowfang Keep, it’s still pretty annoying to waste 15 seconds a run as Whitemane stuns you and rez’s the commander.

For those who want to grind for ultra-rare items, Scarlet Monastery does have a few desirable items with a low drop rate.

Transmog

  • 15+ Very Low/low-value Greens

Craft Materials

  • 541 x Silk Cloth
  • 83 x Wool Cloth
  • Assorted low-value single-digit craft mats.

Misc Loot

  • Plans: Mighty Iron Hammer
  • Pattern: Frostweave Robe
  • 3 x Iron Lockbox

Shadowfang Keep

Time per Clear: 5.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 58g
Gold per Min: 12g
Farming PotentialStandard

As an alliance toon, this run has loads of unskippable role play scenes that add about 2 minutes onto each run. Personally, I quit this run before the last but one boss, as honestly there are so few mobs and so much RP after that point, it’s really not worth it.

The very best items from this dungeon can be found in the chests, make sure to open every one you see, also you loot appraiser or TSM may not fully take into account the value of nonscaled items, as even some of the lvl19 rings from Shadowfang Keep when not scaled to level 60 are worth mid-five-digit sum of gold for twinks!

Chests are the only source for these items when running it on a high-level toon.

Transmog

  • Witching Stave (blue)
  • Gleaming Claymore
  • 15+ low-value Greens and Whites

Craft Materials

  • 365 x Wool Cloth.

Misc Loot

  • Enchant Bracer: Minor Versatility
  • Pattern: Rugged Leather Pants

Lower Blackrock Spire

Time per Clear: 2.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 22g
Gold per Min: 11g
Farming PotentialGood

Lower Blackrock Spire Runs can be run multiple ways from short two-man routes like mine to full clears. Personally, I opted for the short route as I feel it provides the best farming potential, and while the raw gold per run is rather low at 23g per clear, each run dropped 2 Powerful Mojo, which has a decent median value.

Transmog

  • 1 Imbued Plate Greaves
  • 15 Low-Medium Value Green Tmogs

Craft Materials

  • 907 Rune Cloth
  • 50 Red Wolf Meat
  • 60 Tender Wolf Meat
  • 20 Powerful Mojo

Misc Loot

  • 2 Mithril Lockbox
  • 1 Thorium Lockbox
  • 1 Pattern: Mooncloth Bag
  • Three low-value Patterns

Blackrock Depths

Time per Clear: 5.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 54g
Gold per Min: 10g
Farming PotentialGood

While this run doesn’t have the best raw gold, the abundance of Runecloth and transmogs make it’s very valuable, while Runecloth isn’t worth a lot, I sold the entire stock for roughly 250g within seconds, boosting the effective gold per hour to around 990g.

I loved the ability to bull 100+ mobs, and managed my entire route in a single pull, not only did this save time, but it looks incredible, seeling rows of items scrolling past in loot appraiser.

Transmog

  • 75 Low/Medium Value Greens.
  • 1 Krol Blade

Craft Materials

  • 220 Red Wolf Meat
  • 222 Tender Wolf Meat
  • 222 Mageweave Cloth

BlackFathom Deeps

Time per Clear: 6.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 61g
Gold per Min: 10g
Farming PotentialStandard

To get the highest chance of drops you will want to ignore all bonus objective bosses, doing this allows you to spawn a room with over 20 mobs at the last but one boss of the encounter, this is a fantastic way to tempt RNG to give you something good!

This dungeon drops a very large amount of moderately fast-selling/low four-digit value green transmog items, as well as the chance for some blue items that can easily reach five and even six digits.
The dungeon always spawns a chest in of 2 places that are seconds apart. You will find these spawns right before you kill Executioner Gore, they are to the north and west of his location, on the raised brick/stone patios near the stairwells.

One point of interest, this instance is fantastic for getting tangy clam meat, which sold instantly for around 1.2g per piece, while not amazing, its fast gold.
Transmog

  • Onyx Claymore
  • Raincaller Cloak of the Aurora
  • Spiked Chain Cloak of the Aurora
  • 25+ Low to Medium value green Tmogs

Craft Materials

  • 519 x Wool Cloth.
  • 234 x Linen Cloth.
  • 42 x Silk Cloth
  • 122 x Tangy Clam Meat

  • Random low-value Singles.

Misc Loot

  • Pattern: Colorful Kilt
  • Multiple low-value Plans and Patterns
  • 1x Ornate Bronze Lockbox

Ragefire Chasm

Time per Clear: 4.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 39g
Gold per Min: 10g
Farming PotentialPoor

Most of the Loot is soulbound, this time I decided to vendor it all, as frankly there was little else dropping.
The location of this well into horde land makes it a near-worthless run for Alliance players, and about equally poor as Stockade for Horde players.

Over 50% the time for 10 runs was spent resetting instance/running back to start, overall a waste of time and a very low yield dungeon due to lack of humanoid mobs.

Transmog

  • Three low-value Greens
  • Simple Branch (staff)
  • Veteran Bracers

Craft Materials

  • 374 x Linen Cloth
  • Random Single Crafting Mats

Misc Loot

  • Fine Leather Boots
  • White Leather Jerkin
  • Rugged Leather Pants

Zul’Farrak

Time per Clear: 4.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 40g
Gold per Min: 9g
Farming PotentialGood

Zul’Farrak has a massive loot table which makes it both a very rewarding and frustrating run, with every major transmog set from vanilla, and a whole bunch of garbage no one wants, it makes targeting any single item, such as glorious legplates near impossible.

Zul’Farrak has a very good flow, and you can clear the instance in roughly two mega pulls, with such a huge among of humanoid mobs you will find your bag filling up roughly every three runs, while raw gold isn’t that high, the drop rate for blues and greens is one of the highest of any vanilla dungeon.

Transmog

  • 1 Troll Protector
  • 1 Brainlash
  • 30 Low-Medium Value Green Tmogs

Craft Materials

  • 1143 Mageweave Cloth
  • 67 Silk Cloth

Misc Loot

  • 10 Very low-value Patterns

Dire Maul (North)

Time per Clear: 4.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 37g
Gold per Min: 9g
Farming PotentialGood

While there is an abundance of mobs, and the raw gold is better than the West or East wings, I found this run a bit of a drag, while we had a few low-value greens drop, I feel that the Dire Maul (West) provided far better transmog drops, and at a more consistent rate.

Transmog

  • 15 low-value greens

Craft Materials

  • 97 Silk Cloth
  • 271 Mageweave Cloth

Misc Loot

  • 1 Recipe: Invisibility Potion

Wailing Caverns

Time per Clear: 5.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 47g
Gold per Min: 9g
Farming PotentialStandard

I found it easier to avoid full clears and instead only clear the eastern wing, a larger concentration of trash allowed sub 4 minute runs when using a druid and their Moonglade skill to quickly return to entrance, While mats and plans are definitely on the lower side, the amount of BoE greens was very impressive, including several very desirable transmog which have a 4-5 digit price tag on most servers.

There is also a decent amount of vendor trash and soulbound which gave me nearly 480g from ten runs in raw gold, I suggest using a mount with a vendor, as midway you will need to vendor trash to make room for the drops, as there are a lot of trash drops in this instance that provide roughly 45% of your total raw gold, and it would be a shame to simply delete them.

It’s a fantastic run for new transmog collectors, and I fully intend to run it many more times.

Gnomeregan

Time per Clear: 6.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 47g
Gold per Min: 8g
Farming PotentialStandard

This run has a fair bit of backtracking to kill all of the leper gnomes (best mobs to farm for drops) and honestly until you memorise the best route it will feel a bit of a waste of time, but I encourage you to keep at.

The main reason to run Gnomeregan is for the steady supply of very fast selling low-value greens (100-200g region) I sold ten within 30 minutes all to different buyers, and for the chance of ultra-rare items like Hotshot Pilot Gloves, which on some servers can easily buy you a token by themselves.

The Grim Encrusted Objects also have a niche market and ten runs will net you around 150 of them.

Transmog

  • Oscillating Power Hammer
  • 20+ low-value Greens and Whites

Craft Materials

  • 464 x Silk Cloth
  • 193 x Wool Cloth
  • Assorted low-value single-digit craft mats.

Misc Loot

  • Formula: Enchant Weapon – Lesser Elemental Slayer
  • Schematic: Portable Bronze Mortar

Dire Maul (East)

Time per Clear: 2.5 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 13g
Gold per Min: 5g
Farming PotentialStandard

I personally found that dire Maul West was a faster farm, and while both wings share a loot table and drop a steady supply of herbs and low-value greens, the run in the west wing was 30-45 seconds faster per run, and while the raw gold was lower (100g vs 138g), I felt the rate that blues dropped was far higher in the west wing.

I focused on farming the first room (up and downstairs), which gives a steady supply of elites and trash mobs.

Transmog

  • 1 Trickster Leggings
  • 20 Low (xxx) to Low-Med (xxxx) Value Greens

Craft Materials

  • 15 Each of Classic/Vanilla Herbs 10+ varieties.
  • 13 Silk Cloth
  • 17 Living Essence

Misc Loot

  • 2 Strong Iron Lockbox
  • 2 Pattern: Spider Belt

Dire Maul (West)

Time per Clear: 2.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 10g
Gold per Min: 5g
Farming PotentialStandard

This run was a tricky one to decide how to farm, with three wings and a multiple of mobs and bosses, I decided to focus farming the first room, with around 30 elite mobs in a small space I was able to get a very decent supply of green drops as well as a few rare items.

While the raw gold per run was low, I found I had a higher drop per minute of transmog than many vanilla dungeons with a higher GP/h.

Transmog

  • 1 Sparkleshell Legguards
  • 1 Stonebark Gauntlets
  • 1 Hellslayer Battle Axe
  • 15 low to low-med value greens

Craft Materials

  • 41 Mageweave Cloth
  • 20 Silk Cloth
  • 14 Living Essence
  • 383 Silk Cloth

Misc Loot

  • 1 Steel Lockbox
  • 1 Pattern: Red Mageweave Pants

Maraudon

Time per Clear: 6.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 29g
Gold per Min: 5g
Farming PotentialPoor

Maraudon feels like a waste of time, with no rare or exciting Tmog drops, a relatively poor raw gold rate and no plans or patterns coupled with its relatively long run time, it leaves you feeling like you could have made so much gold elsewhere.

Maraudon has one redeeming value is a large number of herbs that drop, roughly 250 in my ten runs, netting you about 1k gold once they sell, using the price averages from EU/NA servers.
While I cannot recommend this run, its certainly straightforward, and requires no porting out, simply run entrance/exit/reset/reenter/repeat until lockout.

I encountered no RP, and mob density is fairly high, sadly not all mobs drop anything (not even trash), so some packs and to be honest entire runs feel worthless.

Transmog

  • 1 Watcher’s Robe

Craft Materials

  • 32 Mageweave Cloth
  • 250 Assorted Classic Herbs

Misc Loot

  • 2 Strong Iron Lockbox
  • 2 Iron Lockbox

Deadmines

Time per Clear: 6.0 Minutes
Gold per Clear: 19g
Gold per Min: 3g
Farming PotentialPoor

Most of the Loot is soulbound, so the only value you will get is vendor/disenchant value.

There are some low-medium Rare BoE drops from Deadmines, 3 of which dropped for me during my ten runs.

This dungeon offers a rather low raw gold yield but a much higher Plan/Pattern drop compared to Stockades.
