The Basics of Becoming Rich in World of Warcraft #3

Today we will touch on multi-purpose farming and how it can help bring in both gold and a vital supply of crafting materials, and also take a look at how not every rainbow has a pot of gold worth finding.

For this example, we will farm Hellfire Citadel (The Bruning Crusade), all three wings provide similar raw gold and crafting material drops and are quickly farmed by any class.

The statistics below are based on ten full clears of each wing.

Hellfire Citadel: Blood Furnace.

Time: 4 minutes per run.

Gold: 2186g.

Crafting Materials: 1200 Netherweave Cloth.

Transmog: 3 low-value blues.

Lockboxes: 3

Notes: A quick mob heavy wing, that provides loads of soul-bound blue items, and several dozen greens, as with most The Burning Crusade Transmog it is entirely worthless, the few ultra-low drop rate/high-value items ensuring that these instances are farmed to oblivion.

Hellfire Citadel: Ramparts.

Time: 2.2 minutes per run.

Gold: 1176g.

Crafting Materials: 550600 Netherweave Cloth/330 Knothide Leather.

Lockboxes: 2

Notes: A ultra-quick mob heavy wing, that provides a fair amount of soul-bound high vendor value items, and 2-3 dozen greens, as with most The Burning Crusade Transmog it is entirely worthless, the few ultra-low drop rate/high-value items ensuring that these instances are farmed to oblivion.

Hellfire Citadel: Shattered Halls

Time: 4.5 minutes per run.

Gold: 2500g.

Crafting Materials: 1100 Netherweave Cloth, 90 Knothide Leather

Designs/Plans: 4

Lockboxes: 4

Notes: A longish mob heavy wing, that provides a modest amount of soul-bound blue items, and several dozen greens, and stacks of vendor greys, as with most The Burning Crusade Transmog it is entirely worthless, the few ultra-low drop rate/high-value items ensuring that these instances are farmed to oblivion.

I did however received several rare designs/plans with 4 figure values, an excellent run for those trying to complete their Outland/The Burning Crusade world drop recipes.

Chasing Rainbows.

Combined these 30 runs took about 2 hours, and netted a total gold value of around 8000g excluding transmog, on the surface that appears profit, but it’s disastrous, as a skinner I could have instead followed one of my legion farms and earned close to 40k gold in Dreamleaf and Stonehide Leather.

This is the risk you take when farming big-ticket items, yes there was a chance I could have found an item worth a token or 2, but the odds are stacked against you, while Dreamleaf sells like hotcakes, and Stonehide leather has both a fast-selling consumable and a very tasty vendor shuffle.

Let’s say for example I takes me 500 runs to get a rare tmog worth 400k, at 4.5 minutes per run I am looking at 37.5 hours, I could have made 475k minimum just farming and vendor shuffling Stonehide Leather in that time, with no RNG risk!

Am I saying to not go after big-ticket items? Certainly not, its a lot of fun, but I would not base your gold making future on it.
