"GodBreakers is a pretty solid action roguelike, and the ability to steal powers from your enemies is rather enjoyable, but its bland aesthetic and repetitive gameplay rob me of any desire to play further."
When I was a teenager growing up in the early 2000s, many large supermarkets in the UK would stock budget PC games, and while occasionally these games were actually very good and well worth playing, for the most part they were lower quality indie titles with uninspiring visuals and AA gameplay mechanics.
After spending some time with GodBreakers, I can find no better comparison than GodBreakers feeling like the type of game you would pick up for £5 at the end of an aisle that also sold scrubbing brushes and dish detergent.
Do not mistake me, they were not all bad games, and GodBreakers is not a bad game, in fact, all things considered, it’s a fairly decent game.
However, it is trying to compete with some truly amazing titles, and while it is not a true souls-like and has much more in common with an action roguelike, the inclusion of souls-like combat brings it into competition with titles from that genre, and that is where GodBreakers falls flat on its face.
That’s just the thing, there is very little wrong with GodBreakers. Equally, there is very little right with it.
GodBreakers cruises along in a river of mediocrity from the moment you hit play, and while there are some nice ideas which have been implemented fairly well, such as the ability to steal enemy god powers, for the most part GodBreakers feels like the type of game that will end up bundled in a Fanatical or Humble Bundle within a year and sold on key sites for less than a dollar shortly after.
I must admit GodBreakers’ visuals do not appeal to me.
While I can appreciate a consistent aesthetic, there is something about the soulless character designs and sterile world-building that just put me off from the get-go.
Admittedly this could be due to my preconceived notions about the souls-like genre, as someone who has played hundreds of games over the past few years and enjoyed titles of all kinds and styles, I just find GodBreakers’ aesthetic to be repulsive and unattractive.

GodBreakers is not a bad game, and honestly I can see why younger players would find it appealing. However, after playing grittier and more adult-focused titles, I find returning to a game that was clearly made with a much younger audience in mind difficult for certain genres.
Ultimately, it’s not a bad game, and for those looking for a less mature “souls-lite” action-roguelike experience, there is fun to be had. But personally, it did not capture my interest in the way many other titles in the genre have, despite being a fairly competent game that performs well and has a consistent aesthetic, even if that aesthetic is one that will not appeal to everyone.
We found Godbreakers to be a good game, meaning it is likely to be enjoyable for most players, despite having a few areas that could be improved upon.
"In Woods is an entirely unpretentious title that makes no claims to be something bigger or better than it is, and for that reason, I can give it a passing grade despite it being one of the less innovative titles in the genre."
"While Gunbot Diplomacy is a great-looking game, it feels like such a direct copy of Brotato that it makes me want to play that instead."
"While I would be remiss to say that the developer put no effort into Lizard Survivors: Battle for Hyperborea, it seems that much of that effort was misplaced, and as a result, Lizard Survivors: Battle for Hyperborea is one of the most disappointing games I played in 2023."
