Is Chivalry 2, Worth Playing?
Chivalry 2 is an M-Rated title, and this review may contain screenshots that some readers may find offensive/disturbing.

Chivalry 2 perfectly combines Monty Pythonesque humour and buttery smooth combat that somehow just works.

The Lowdown.

Anything Can Be A Weapon.

In Chivalry 2, anything can be a weapon, and when I say anything, I mean anything, from decapitated heads to chickens, tables, taxidermied bears, and candelabras. If you can pick it up, you can use it to bludgeon your enemy, making even the most routine battle a truly engaging (and often bizarre) spectacle.

Non-Expiring Battlepasses.

Chivalry 2’s battle passes never expire, and players who purchase multiple battle passes can work on them simultaneously, something which has begun to grow on me, seeing how well it has worked for Dauntless and, to a lesser extent, Halo Infinite.

While I would not expect to see Fortnite and other major players follow suit anytime soon, I feel battle passes that never expire are more consumer-friendly and will be the eventual standard to which publishers will strive, in much the same way that cosmetic purchases and battle passes have all but replaced the concept of the RNG lootbox in the western market.

Narrative-Focused Gameplay.

While Chivalry 2  lacks single-player content, it is certainly not lacking in narrative content, with each objective-based map being part of a wider narrative chronicling the war between the Agatha Knights and the Mason Order.

While this doesn’t enhance gameplay in a literal sense, it does help keep missions tense, with all three factions having a reason to continue fighting one another.

Fast Matchmaking.

Due to Chivalry 2’s popularity and support for cross-platform multiplayer, finding matches at any time of day is very easy for popular modes and possible even for less popular modes such as mounted combat.

Limited Time Modes.

Torn Banner Studios like to keep things fresh, and one way they have done that is by introducing limited-time models with custom rules; a recent example of this would be the archer only limited time mode (Volley), which sees two teams of archers (and crossbowmen) do battle across a variety of battlefields.

Volley mode is a great way for new players to practice their archery skills without the threat of a melee class cutting them to ribbons while they are still perfecting their aim.

Frequent Free Updates.

Chivalry 2 continues to receive sizable updates even as it nears its second birthday, something which appears to be planned at least until the end of 2023, which is very admirable, with most titles receiving only one year of free post-launch updates before transiting to a hybrid Free Update/Paid DLC model.

Limited Microtransactions.

Chivalry 2 has one of the sparsest in-game stores of any cross-platform multiplayer title, with only a handful of DLC on sale, in addition to a handful of emotes and non-expiring battle passes as of late 2022.

In addition, while cosmetics can be unlocked with either Gold (in-game currency) or Crowns (premium currency), players must reach the respective rank of each class before the item in question becomes available to purchase, meaning that even those paying with premium currency cannot bypass the grind and purchase the best-looking cosmetics out of the gate.

Third Faction.

Since its inception, the Chivalry franchise has always focused on a civil war between the Agatha Knights and the Mason Order. While the roles have reversed, and the ruling power of the first game(Agatha) is now the rebel faction, the civil war continues in all of its gore-filled hilarity.

That was until the Tenosian Invasion update, which saw a third faction, the Ottoman Empire-inspired Tenosian Empire, enter the fray, bringing with them an arsenal of Middle Eastern-inspired weapons, which brought much variety to what had been a pretty standard Eurocentric arsenal.

While the Tenosian Empire has yet to make serious moves to wrest control from the warring factions, I would love to see their role expanded in future seasons and perhaps even set aside their differences with the Agatha Knights and work together to defeat the  Mason Order.

Final Verdict.

Chivalry 2 is an excellent title that continues to improve thanks to the dedication of its developer (Torn Banner Studios) and the passion of its now multiplatform community.

I recommend Chivalry 2 not only to fans of the competitive slasher genre but also to fans of casual competitive games.

While “becoming the best” takes more time than many casual players are willing (or able) to invest, you do not need to be a top-ranked player to have a lot of fun, and that, above all, is what gaming should be about.
