"While Edens Zero is not the worst JRPG on the market, it has little to offer gamers beyond fan service and generic JRPG mechanics."
For those unaware of the origins of Edens Zero, it is an anime/manga created by Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tale, a popular anime that is mostly comprised of fan service, held together by a generic plotline about friendship and adventure.
And Edens Zero is little better, with Hiro Mashima reusing many character designs, personality types, and fan service incidents in his new series.
Edens Zero could be summed up as a generic anime in which female characters exist purely for titillation and crude humour, and very rarely contribute meaningfully to the narrative, unless they can do so while being half naked or exploited in some other manner.
The plots are generic, the character designs are literally reused, and overall its bland and offers little to anyone who isn’t in it mostly for large boobs and and sexy attire.
An ultimately negative description of the series, that can be equally applied to the game, which is little more than a reskinned generic JRPG, with extra jiggle, and little else.
That said, I always strive to be fair, and not everything about the game is terrible, even if most of it is rather generic.
While I am not a fan of the hyper sexualised character designs, the art style looks really nice for a anime game, and while the maps feel barren and cities lifeless, overall it is a very pretty looking game if nothing else.
While Eden Zero’s combat mechanics are serviceable, they are incredibly generic, and for the most part consists of little more than button mashing and dodging.
For some reason the developers thought it was a good idea to bind photo mode to the right thumb stick, meaning that players to attempt to press down to run (a common key bind) or are a little heavy handed will enter photo mode by accident frequently, and often at the worst possible times.
While I am sure missing a jiggle or a bounce from Rebecca would be heart-breaking to some, I am sure most gamers would prefer a less intrusive location for photo mode, than the thumbstick used to manoeuvre their character.
The opening cutscene is a bizarre edit of multiple spoilers from the game, including snippets from cutscenes, boss battles and even the “death” of a major character, its all rather odd, of course being Edens Zero, it also needs some fan service, which is provided in the form of Rebecca in the shower, its all rather odd, even by JRPG standards.
While some games include movie quality dialogue, and others have dialogue so bad its laughable, Eden Zero somehow manages to avoid both of these scenarios, with dialogue which can best be described as bland beyond all reason.
While the occasional line is good enough to catch attention or bad enough to warrant a chuckle, for the most part following the narrative via subtitles is about as exciting as reading the back of a shampoo bottle while sat on the toilet.
Ultimately not the worst dialogue you will ever encounter, but certainly nothing to write home about.
Since starting this site in 2017, we have covered literally hundreds of titles, and without question Edens Zero is one of the worst games when it comes to the portrayal of female characters e have yet to cover, with almost every single female character being designed to appeal to a certain demographic.
A perfect example of the how poorly Edens Zero treats its female characters, is encountered almost right away, when players are introduced to the character of Rebecca who suffers from some of the worst jiggle physics I have witnessed in any game made within the last 20 years.
Rebecca’s large breasts bounce, jiggle, clap, shake and shimmy around at the slightest movement, if this was not bad enough, her revealing clothing is often shot from worst camera angles possible, as to give her “assets” the most exposure.
In addition, at times she wears shorts and a crop top which leave the top of her butt cracked exposed, it feels so exploitive it borders on nauseating, and the outfits she acquires as the game progresses are no better, and are indeed often much worse.
Rebecca’s aside, other female characters far little better with almost every single female character having large breasts and tight or revealing attire.
Without doubt Edens Zero is one of the most fanservice filled JRPGs on the market, and yet it is somehow less offensive that the show itself, with several scenes being “toned down” for the game, including the scene where Shiki meets Rebecca.
In the show he holds her face and gropes her breasts while commenting how soft and squishy she is, while in the game he only grabs her face, despite the scene ending with Rebecca covering her breasts defensively after hitting him, indicating that this scene was originally intended to play out the same way as it did in the anime, before being censored for release in western markets.
While some dismiss the sexualization of female characters in video games as a non issue, causing others to lust, and in fact, lusting after even fictional women is not only unhealthy but is damaging spiritually, with Jesus Christ having this to say on the matter.
Edens Zero is a role playing game developed by Konami Digital Entertainment and published by Konami, it released on 15 July 2025, and is available on PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Edens Zero supports the following peripherals:
Edens Zero is rated PEGI 16+ and contains:
Edens Zero is a decent enough video game adaption of the Edens Zero manga and anime, however compared to so many other JRPGS on the market, it just feels cheap and nasty, with a greater focus being placed on fan service than actual game play mechanics.
While fans of the show are sure to love it, and the narrative is passible in spite of the horrendous dialogue, I have played so many better JRPGS that I find it difficult to recommend it at all, and certainly not at full price.
All in all, Edens Zero is a disappointing game from one of my favourite publishers, and I would hope that Edens Zero’s poor performance on most platforms detours them from wasting resources on such titles in future.
Ultimately not the worst JRPG you will ever play, but it has little to offer anyone who isn’t in it for Edens Zero or its dreadful portrayal of female characters.
We found Edens Zero to be a mediocre game, meaning that while it has some redeeming qualities, it's held back by noticeable flaws that prevent it from being truly enjoyable.
"Chernobylite is an excellent RPG held back by edgy writing, excessive profanity and overconfident developers who react unfavourably to negative feedback and criticism"
"While its focus on non-violence will be offputting for some, players looking for an in-depth medieval life sandbox need look no further than Medieval Dynasty."
"While Class of Heroes: Anniversary Edition is not a bad game, nostalgia is the main reason why anyone would choose to play it today."
