As fascism rears its ugly head the world over, Starship Troopers, one of the most iconic satires of fascism, enjoys yet another excellent title.
I must not admit to not having high expectations for Starship Troopers: Continuum. After all, the franchise isn’t known for high-quality titles, and excluding recent releases, it had gone for over a decade without any signs of life.
However, in recent years, as fascism rises its ugly head the world over, more people have come to appreciate the sarcastic portrayal of one of the most demonic forms of government known to man.
Fascism is a system that deserves to be mocked relentlessly, and Starship Troopers is a movie that accomplished that objective wonderfully, highlighting the absurdity and inherent evil of a system that goes against man’s desire for freedom and the right to choose.
While Starship Troopers: Terrian Command was a fairly generic Slitherine title, Starship Troopers: Extermination caught a lot of media attention because it was a perfect alternative to Helldivers 2, a title which dominated the press during the first half of 2024, for better or worse.
As a fan of Starship Troopers: Extermination, I was curious about what Starship Troopers: Continuum could offer in compassion, considering the inherent limitations of VR hardware such as Meta Quest 2.
So, when I was given the chance to review Starship Troopers: Continuum, I was very excited!
And while it is clear that hardware restrictions and budget have held the game back in many areas, the final product is not only good but excellent, with engaging combat, a variety of mechanics, and even a 20 mission singleplayer campaign and rogue-like progression system, ensuring there is plenty to do for solo players, which is just as well, as unfortunately Starship Troopers: Continuum appears to be dead on arrival.
While I am sure some people are playing, I have been unable to find a single lobby even when selecting QuickPlay.
That being said, I am sure there are a few open lobbies later in the evening, and my experience on Meta Quest 2 may not be the same as on PSVR2.
However, based on what I have seen, it’s a niche title on both platforms. Players should expect to play solo or with friends, as matchmaking is broken or no one uses it.
What surprised me is how long each mission is, around 20-30 minutes. These missions can include exploration, area defence, and even boss battles with unique mechanics.
These encounters are surprisingly impressive considering that Starship Troopers: Continuum retails for just $19.99 and the technical limitations of some of the platforms that it supports, chiefly Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 2 Pro.
Starship Troopers: Continuum is a shooter video game developed by XR Games and published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, it was released on 17 October 2024 and retails for $19.99.
Starship Troopers: Continuum is available on the following platforms: Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and PSVR2.
As of December 2024, around 1000 people play Starship Troopers: Continuum on a fairly regular basis.
Starship Troopers: Continuum is barely active, meaning that while finding full lobbies is possible at peak times in populated regions, matchmaking times are likely to be very lengthy, and for those in less populated regions, finding full lobbies may be difficult.
Starship Troopers: Continuum offers the following matchmaking options:
Starship Troopers: Continuum is rated PEGI 16+ and contains:
Starship Troopers: Continuum is a fantastic game for fans of Starship Troopers or VR FPS in general, and while the selection of weapons isn’t as vast as I would like, each weapon works well.
When you are facing down a group of fast-moving bugs coming at you from all directions, any gun is a good gun, with the exception of the standard-issue sidearm, which feels like shooting a bull elephant with a peashooter; most weapons allow you to say with confidence, “I’m doing my part!”
