Is Mist Survival, Worth Playing?

Mist Survival was a great game at launch, but now almost five years and major updates later, I just want it to cease development before it gets any worse.

The Lowdown.

It Gets Worse Over Time.

Mist Survival at launch was one of the most promising survival games on Steam, and I and many others were astonished that it was mostly the work of a single developer due to its low price point ($10.99); I feel that with just a few months of polish Mist Survival would have sold very well as a completed product and that every update since launch has made the game worse than its original release.

While there were a few issues that need to be addressed (such as the player character not being able to wear trousers), the core gameplay loop was relatively bug-free and rewarding, two things which are no longer the case, with players often encountering upwards of 20 bugs per hour, including session ending bugs that require a player uses the suicide command on their character to progress further.

The developer (Rati Wattanakornprasit) certainly has a lot of drive and potential. Still, if the last 4+ years of Mist Survival development is anything to go by, he lacks project management ability. I and many others feel that Mist Survival would be in a far better place right now if Rati was only tasked with developing the game and had little input over its direction.

Store Assets.

Many developers utilise store assets when making a game; this is nothing to be ashamed of, and a solo developer like Rati Wattanakornprasit has no other choice but to either outsource to freelance artists or use store assets, So I do not blame him for using the cheaper option whenever possible (store assets).

The problem, however, with relying on store-bought assets is inconsistency, and I honestly have no idea who our protagonist is supposed to be fighting with Confederate supporting rednecks, middle eastern terrorists, generic thugs and stereotypical mercenaries all appearing to work together towards some unseen goal.

To make matters worse, the introduction of busty female NPCs had cheapened the overall aesthetic, especially when people had been waiting to include female models for several years.

By focusing only on the sex appeal of female characters, the developer has reduced Mist Survival from a serious survival game to just another game with “guns and boobs” for teenage boys to enjoy.

Ironically, the female NPCs in question are some of the only NPCs to feature unique models and appear to have been designed especially for the game.

Fairly Priced.

While I don’t have many good things to say about Mist Survival, I must say it is reasonably priced. While I hate what it has become, someone who had not played Mist Survival at launch will still get their money’s worth at this point, despite it being a much worse and far more empty game than originally offered.

Visuals.

While Mist Survival has a huge problem with floating items and broken animations, it is visually a very pretty game for the price. It Is easily on par with titles such as DayZ and Scum, which operate with much larger budgets and teams.

Repairing Vehicles.

One of the best things about Mist Survival that has remained consistent since its launch in 2018 is the way it allowed players to repair and drive vehicles, the feeling of getting a derelict car running again and salvaging for working parts in similarly derelict cars feels great, and being able to siphon fuel from the tanks of vehicles to keep your car on the road is an aspect of survival that many survival games ignore.

NPC Bases and Base Building.

Building and raiding bases are the bread and butter of multiplayer survival games. Mist Survival allows solo players to get a taste of that excitement by raiding NPC bases and securing critical supplies and weapons needed to build their base.

In addition, NPC and infected (zombies) will attack player bases, making a strong defence and well-armed NPCs essential for those wishing to make a permanent home in the dangerous world of Mist Survival.

Are The Developers Active?

Mist Survival’s solo developer remains active, but it is clearly not his only job (nor should it be), making a game s difficult for a team of full-time developers, let alone a part-time solo developer.

In short, while Mist Survival remains in active development, updates are few and far between and do not always align well with player feedback.

On average Mist Survival takes between 20 and 40 hours to complete.

Final Verdict.

Mist Survival was a better game at launch in 2018 than it is today, and based on the last four years of updates, it appears that its solo developer is uncertain about which direction to take it; as a result, Mist Survival is a worse game in 2023 than it was at launch.

While the developer remains active, updates are few and far between and, unfortunately, have a habit of breaking or removing more than they add.

Because of this and other reasons, we can no longer recommend Mist Survival, despite being very impressed with it at launch and still having hope that it may yet live up to its potential.
