A Story of Unrealised Potential.

When I first played Fortnite: Rocket Racing, I enjoyed it and still enjoy it a year later.

However, it quickly became apparent that the developers failed to see that while they had a firm foundation and great concept on their hands, that alone would not make Fortnite: Rocket Racing a success.

When playing during those early days, I assumed that, like Fortnite: Battle Royale, Fortnite: Rocket Racing would evolve with each season, adding new features and mechanics to ensure that gameplay remained fresh.

Unfortunately, that was not the case, and while the developers did add new tracks and rewards, essentially Fortnite: Rocket Racing is the same game today that it was at launch, and with so many other great “kart racers” on the market, with unique mechanics and power-ups, It is difficult to play Fortnite: Rocket Racing for more than a few hours per season, as once you complete the weekly/seasonal quests, there is no real reason to play it any further.

From Bad to Worse.

What makes Fortnite: Rocket Racing’s unfortunate fate even sadder is that Fortnite: Battle Royale has so many unique items that would translate to Fortnite: Rocket Racing, such as snowball launchers, guided missiles, shields, and more.

I would love to engage in Mario Kart-style vehicular combat as my favourite Fortnite character.

With new items being regularly added to Fortnite: Battle Royale, there is no reason why Fortnite: Rocket Racing could not receive 1-2 new power-ups each season, ensuring that gameplay remains fresh and exciting.

Because the developers did not take this route, in late 2024, they were forced to announce that Fortnite: Rocket Racing would receive no further major content updates and that themed updates, in particular, would not be returning.

However, they did clarify that new quests, challenges, rewards, and (presumably) the occasional developer-created track will be added to the game, in addition to showcasing community-created tracks and modes, bringing Fortnite: Rocket Racing into line with the rest of the Fortnite Metaverse, where up to 40% of active players enjoy community-made modes during peak playtimes.

Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining.

While Fortnite: Rocket Racing is not the success that other official modes are, and it only peaks at a few thousand concurrent active users, outside of seasonal resets, it has improved the Fortnite Metaverse as a whole in ways that go far beyond the scope of a single mode, or even multiple related modes.

  • The release of Fortnite: Rocket Racing ensured closer integration with Rocket League, including the groundwork for players to access supported purchases across multiple titles owned by Epic Games.
  • The release of Fortnite: Rocket Racing has improved UEFN as a whole and allowed third-party creators to implement its improved driving mechanics into new games and modes built with UEFN.
  • The release of Fortnite: Rocket Racing brought with it the ability to purchase and use custom car cosmetics, which benefit all modes supporting player-driven vehicles.
  • How Epic Games handled the winding down of support for Fortnite: Rocket Racing by handing over the future of Fortnite: Rocket Racing to the community bodes well for the long-term future of the Fortnite Metaverse.
  • Fortnite: Rocket Racing is a great way to progress battle passes, and despite no longer receiving major content drops, it’s still a great way to pass a few hours a week.

While Fortnite: Rocket Racing should have been so much more when all is said and done, I am still glad it is here, and I appreciate its contributions to the wider Fortnite Metaverse.
