"Last Flag's main problem is that it is not good, cheap, or unique enough to compete with titles like Fortnite, which have dominated the live service genre for the better part of a decade."

It’s Not Looking Good.

Last Flag has a serious problem. It’s not very good, and whenever you’re trying to compete in an already overcrowded market, you have to either be better, cheaper, or unique.

Is Last Flag Cheaper Than The Market Leaders?

The live service genre is dominated by excellent titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Overwatch 2, and Marvel Rivals, all of which are free-2-play.

Because of this, a new live service game cannot be cheaper, so that’s out of the equation, and in this case, the developers have not even attempted to do so, marketing Last Flag as a free-2-play live service title, a death knell for all but the very best and most unique live service games.

Is Last Flag Better Than The Market Leaders?

It’s not better. Frankly, it doesn’t even feel good, or come close to being comparable to the most popular games in the live service genre.

Character animations feel off, combat feels unrewarding, and map design feels more like a slog than anything resembling fun.

I love live service games. I play a lot of them. Yes, I also enjoy single-player games. I frequently spend time on long single-player experiences. Right now, I’m going through Ghost of Tsushima, and I’m really enjoying it.

But live service games are something I come back to time and time again. I’ve been playing Fortnite since the beginning. I’ve played Overwatch and Overwatch 2 on and off, and Call of Duty: Warzone consistently. These are games I’ve invested a considerable amount of time into.

And yet, after playing Last Flag for only a very short time, I was genuinely bored.

The gunplay was uninteresting, and I was mostly playing with and against bots, because there were so few people online.

Is Last Flag Unique In Any Way?

Last Flag’s flag hiding and capture mechanic is unique, as it’s a capture the flag mode within a grid-based environment where you choose where to hide your own flag, and capturing radar outposts allows you to slowly reveal parts of the enemy side of the map where it is not, until only one square remains. I cannot take that away from it. That is a great idea.

The problem is, everything else about the game is just bland.

It Failed To Hold My Attention.

After playing through the game for the purpose of this review, my initial thought was: I am never going to play this again. It bored me in a way that few games have. Nothing pulled me in. None of the characters appealed to me.

Their designs felt all over the place. While they may be consistent within the Last Flag setting, I don’t really understand what they’re going for, lumberjacks, ninjas, musicians? It never quite comes together.

Female Character Designs.

While I appreciate the female character models are not as exploitative or objectivising as those found in many other live service titles, I am not sure why the developers felt that it was a good idea to launch with 6 male characters and only 3 female characters, especially if they were going to make two of those characters wear “revealing” clothing.

And things do not look set to improve, with the first post-launch character being revealed to be a female graffiti artist with very short shorts, an exaggerated figure, provocative pose, and a predominantly bare midriff.

While I am not saying these outfits are terribly offensive, and certainly not saying they are as bad as those found in other games, the question remains, why are the male characters allowed to be “cool”, while the female characters are required to be sexy?

While some may dismiss this as a non-issue, I feel strongly that making content purely to titillate is wrong, and while there is a time and place for nudity and sexuality in games, making every female character eye candy is offensive and, for those prone to acting on their lust, dangerous.

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. - Matthew 5:28-30

The Writing Is On The Wall.

With player numbers as low as they are, and the developers being forced to introduce free-2-play weekends every weekend until the summer update, the writing’s on the wall.

It’s done.

Better games have been forced to close. High Guard was forced to close, and that was a vastly better game than this, despite itself being rather mediocre.

I just cannot recommend anyone spend money on Last Flag. It feels far more likely to go free-2-play or shut down in the near future.

Final Verdict.

Ultimately, I cannot recommend Last Flag. Frankly, it hasn’t got a chance to survive without drastic changes, changes that would likely require taking it offline entirely and rebuilding it from the ground up.

And that’s not something I think is fair to expect from the developers, especially considering this is their first game.

We found Last Flag to be a poor game, meaning that while it has some redeeming qualities, it's ultimately disappointing and not recommended for most gamers.
