Review: Is Fall Guys Worth Playing?

Fall Guys is a lot of fun in small doses but lacks the addictive replayability commonly found in other Battle Royal games, and as a result, playing solo does get old fast, and even playing in a squad with friends starts to feel stale after a while.

Creative Mode.

In May 2023, Fall Guys received its version of Fortnite’s legendary creative mode, allowing users to create their own levels for the first time.

While the mode is nowhere as complex as Fortnite’s current creative mode (Unreal Editor For Fortnite), it has proven very popular with the community, with over 230k maps being created and published within 48 hours of the editor going live.

While I fully expect Mediatonic to continue releasing new levels (with 50 new levels scheduled to release in season 4 alone), including a curated user-created content playlist signals that user-created content will be central to Fall Guys’ long-term sustainability.

Fame Pass.

It appears Epic Games is experimenting with different length season passes, with Fortnite receiving an event-specific 21-day pass in 2023 and Fall Guys swapping to a series of smaller and cheaper passes that offer faster progression and a greater number of rewards per season, something which should prove popular with the community if the quality of passes persists and the pace progression allows for players to “take a few days away” without falling irreparably behind.

Epic Games Purchase:

Epic Games has a clear strategy for the creation of the metaverse. Part of that strategy involves cornering the market on family-friendly, highly replayable multiplayer games, which lend themselves well to seasonal content. So far, that strategy is working with Rocket League, Dauntless, Fall Guys and Fortnite, all published by Epic Games and made exclusively available on PC via the Epic Game Store.

With Epic outright owning Fall Guys, Fortnite and Rocket League, the metaverse edges ever closer and a future which sees all Epic Games enjoying cross-promotion, such as the Crown Clash promotion, which saw players of all three games receive rewards Fall Guys on any platform.

Business Model Change:

Epic Games Store is the place for high-quality and content-rich free-2-play titles. It surprises no one that Fall Guys would mirror Fortnite’s very successful business model after its acquisition by Epic Games.

While changing your business model can be a risky business, Epic Games and Mediatonic made sure to compensate owners of the game with a bundle of cosmetic items, in-game currency and the season 1 battle pass, ensuring that anyone who purchased the game on either PSN or Steam received generous compensation for their patronage.

In addition, Fall Guys allows players to unlock various free cosmetics with a non-premium currency (Kudos) and unlock many free rewards without purchasing the battlepass.

Crossovers:

Everyone wants a piece of the Fortnite Pie. As a result, Epic Games has a good relationship with many intellectual property owners and nowhere is this more evident than in Fortnite, which has enjoyed crossovers with dozens of popular franchises, including Assassins Creed, DC Comics, Star Wars, and The Walking Dead, not to mention the lucrative and long-running relationship with Disney which has seen well over a dozen of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters make their way into Fortnite, including the Avengers, and ever-popular characters such as The Scarlet Witch and Dr Strange.

While Fall Guys has a long way to go if it hopes to out-collab Fortnite, with over 65 collabs under its belt, including iconic characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Ratchet (Ratchet and Clank), Master Chief, and King Louie (The Jungle Book) it is off to a great start.

Unique but Repetitive:

What makes Fall Guys unique is that it breaks away from many of the traditional elements found in a battle royale title. The developers deserve to be commended for trying something new and creating a title that millions love.

Unfortunately, it has not all been sunshine and roses. Unlike most of the Battle Royale genre, Fall Guys gets old very fast, and even the most diehard fans of casual-competitive games will find it difficult to stay engaged for long periods.

I have around 1200 hours on Fortnite and still eagerly come back for more every chance I get; however, after just 5 hours on Fall Guys, I am already bored, and while much of this is personal preference, the fact remains that Fall Guys does not necessarily appeal to fans of the Battle Royale genre.

Cosmetics:

Fall Guys offers players a massive selection of free and paid cosmetics to customize the appearance of their Fall Guy. While the lion’s share of customization options are locked behind microtransactions, even free players will, in time, unlock a sizable collection of shaders and cosmetics to help them stand out from the crowd.
