Review: Is Killing Floor III Worth Playing?

Its A Worse Version Of Better Games.

I must begin this by saying that Killing Floor 3 is in no way a bad game, however it feels like a worse version of better games, and while I enjoy playing it, as its always nice to play something new.

However if I had the choice between playing a new Call of Duty Zombies map or Killing Floor 3, there would be no contest.

Call of Duty Zombies, despite being the “third mode” of most Call of Duty titles, is the king of the first person zombie killing genre, and while Killing Floor 3 does a few things differently such as 6 player co-op, with so few people playing, does it really matter, and with Killing Floor 3 continuing to struggle with player retention, even if there are enough players “today” to enjoy 6 player co-op without the benefit of a friend group, will that be true in six months time?

“Decent Enough” Is Not Enough Anymore.

Once again I must clarify its not a bad game, but in almost every single category in which it does well, Call of Duty Zombies does better.

In a year when there are literally dozens of excellent games demanding our time and money, “decent enough” titles such as Killing Floor 3 will struggle to attract players, and looking at how few people are playing Killing Floor 3 right now on Steam, its clear that is already happening.

Its Doing Very Badly.

At the time of writing this review, there are more than 10x more people playing Killing Floor 2 (3,384) than Killing Floor 3 (27o) on steam, which is massively bad news for the developers, and those who have already pre-purchased year one content.

While I do not think for a moment the developers will not release everything they have presold, I am not confident that there will be enough players left at that time for it to matter much, and while they could turn it around (and other developers have come back from worse positions), whatever they intend to do, they had better do it quickly, as with each passing day, Killing Floors reputation as a “failed and dead game” grows.

While many good games have been called the same, truth is a potent ally, and at times a deadly foe, and in the case of Killing Floor 3, accusations of being a failed and dead game, are not so far from the truth and the longer it remains that way, the harder it will be to stage any potential comeback, regardless of how “game changing” any potential futures updates may be.

Final Verdict.

I like Killing Floor 3, its mindless fun when playing alone, and even better when playing with friends, however  that positive description could be used to describe almost the entire “zombie killing genre”, and by itself is not enough reason to buy Killing Floor 3, especially for gamers who already have access to titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which offers players some of the best zombie killing action in the history of the franchise.

Ultimately Killing Floor 3 is worth picking up for fans of the genre, however I personally would not invest in unreleased/future content to season passes at this time, as nothing I have witnessed so far gives me confidence that it will finish out its first year strong, despite being fairly confident that the developers will make sure that all currently planned content is released before being forced to cease development.

We found Killing Floor III to be a good game, meaning it is likely to be enjoyable for most players, despite having a few areas that could be improved upon.
