Game Overview.
Megabonk Is Great, but It Used to Be Better
As someone who is a huge fan of survivor games and roguelikes, I can safely say that Megabonk is a good game, and I love it. Unfortunately, I love it a whole lot less than I would have before some of the later updates.
The game has progressively got worse, and while the developer has clearly tried to polish aspects of it and make a better game, the rough edges were part of what made Megabonk so much fun in the first place.
Megabonk is pretty edgy and meme-filled. At times, it feels like the sort of thing a Reddit basement dweller would have created, but that was also part of its charm. If you can overlook the Gen Z memes and plenty of stuff that clearly is not aimed at my generation as an elder millennial, there is a lot of fun to be had here.
The gameplay itself is fun, even though there really is not that much to do and there are very few maps. The problem is that I actually preferred Megabonk before some of its later updates.
Broken Builds Are the Whole Point
For me, updates such as the Graveyard content and later balancing changes made Megabonk less fun, because the entire point of a game called Megabonk should be the ridiculous broken builds.
That craziness is where Megabonk is at its best.
You can make a build that does minuscule damage incredibly quickly, create something based around enormous critical hits, or even chase effects that give you something ridiculous like a 1% chance of instantly killing something.
That is what makes the game fun. It is not supposed to feel perfectly balanced and carefully controlled. The enjoyment comes from finding combinations that become completely stupid and seeing how far you can push them.
The more those rough edges are polished away in the name of balance, the more Megabonk loses some of what made it appealing to me in the first place.
As it stands now, Megabonk is still crazy, just not quite as crazy as it used to be.
Megabonk Is Basically a Meme on the Genre
Visually, Megabonk is edgy, low quality and deliberately rough, and honestly, it is ugly.
The map design is bonkers and basic, and the whole thing feels like a meme on the survivor genre. I was willing to go along with that because sometimes memes, satire and sarcastic takes on established genres can be fantastic.
Fable is a good example. The original games approached the fantasy genre with a sarcastic, almost satirical sense of humour, and the series is still relevant today despite disappearing for many years. Fable is returning in 2027 and, arguably, it is one of the more anticipated upcoming games outside of monsters such as The Elder Scrolls VI and GTA VI.
There is nothing inherently wrong with making fun of a genre while still being part of it.
Megabonk understands that, and at its best, the cheap visuals, ridiculous characters, memes and broken builds all work together because the entire game feels as though it knows exactly how stupid it is supposed to be.
That is also why polishing away too much of the stupidity works against it.
The Bigger Problem Is Its Future
If Megabonk were still being updated regularly, and if there were a team behind it that gave me confidence new content would continue arriving, I would thoroughly recommend it.
Unfortunately, that is where I have a much bigger problem.
The developer has basically vanished from the public side of development, at least as far as Steam is concerned, and updates have slowed dramatically.
The Spooky Update arrived on 14 December 2025, followed by the H A T S update on 25 January 2026 and hotfixes running into early February. Since then, there has been no major new content update listed through the game’s official Steam news.
That is a long time for a game that already does not have a huge amount of content.
There has been talk of more content and future updates, but right now there is very little publicly happening to give me confidence that Megabonk is going to receive the sort of ongoing development I would want from a game like this.
Players are openly asking whether the game has been abandoned, and from where I am sitting, it is difficult not to understand why they are asking.
That matters because Megabonk feels like a game that should keep growing. More maps, more ridiculous builds, more characters and more stupid things to discover could keep this sort of game entertaining for a very long time.
Without that ongoing development, what is already here starts to feel much more limited.

Final Verdict.
Megabonk is a good game, and I have had a lot of fun with it.
The problem is that I want to like Megabonk more than I actually do now.
If you are looking for a well-balanced game that will continually be updated, with its rough edges gradually refined into something more polished, I would probably look elsewhere. Ironically, Megabonk was more enjoyable to me when it was in its glorious rough state, full of stupid ideas and crazy broken builds.
Trying to polish those rough edges has taken away some of what made the game fun, while the lack of substantial new updates leaves me questioning where it goes from here.
If Megabonk still had regular substantial updates and a clear future ahead of it, I would thoroughly recommend it.
Unfortunately, It does not, so I cannot.
