Review: Is Wanderburg Worth Playing?

Wanderburg was a pleasant surprise. I’m a huge fan of Survivor and Survivor-like games, more commonly known as action roguelikes in the broader genre, and this pretty much has everything I want. Well, almost.

Gameplay and Combat

I love Wanderburg’s gameplay. I love the bosses, and for the most part, I love the combat and active abilities. The only thing I wish there was more of is bizarreness, more creativity, more insanity, and perhaps the ability to combine and fuse weapons, a feature that is common in many other survivor-likes.

While some of the weapons and abilities are potent and even occasionally overpowered, many feel inconsequential. They just don’t feel impactful, especially against higher-level enemies and bosses.

That said, there’s room for creativity and build experimentation in Wanderburg even if it does not have as many options for build-crafting as many other titles.

Overall, I never felt overpowered. And survivor-likes, at their core, are power and build-crafting fantasies, which is why I cannot give Wanderburg the perfect score it otherwise deserves.

Building Your Castle

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. I love the way your castle physically grows larger throughout each run with every boss defeated. By the time you get to the final boss, you’re a chonky boy.

Unfortunately, Wanderburg’s combat mechanics do not feel as powerful at endgame as they should.

While by the end of each run I am dishing out a lot more damage than at the start of each run, there is no comparison between Wanderburg and titles such as Vampire Survivors, where players almost feel “godlike” in their damage output, and not that any game could truly capture the power and majesty of God, but Wanderburg  could try a little harder.

Performance and Presentation

Performance is rock solid, gameplay is very fun, and there’s a decent amount of combat. While the low-poly art style looks okay, I admit I would prefer 2D or 2D HD, but that’s a personal preference.

Final Verdict.

Ultimately, it’s a fantastic game and one that I think a lot of people would really enjoy. I highly recommend it. That being said, it doesn’t reach a perfect score. To me, a perfect score is a game that has very few flaws or exceeds expectations by a huge amount, and this just doesn’t.

Wanderburg is a great game, and ultimately I recommend it, and it’s certainly going into my rotation of action roguelikes, but I would be lying if I called it unmissable, despite feeling that Wanderburg is a title that many fans of the genre would enjoy.

8/10
