Review: Is Miscreated Worth Playing?

There is no reason to play Miscreated when so many better games exist in the same genre.

Silent Developers.

Entrada Interactive has a nasty habit of going silent for multiple years at a time, doing little to assure the rapidly diminishing Miscreated community that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

This sad fact, combined with the abrupt announcement of a new game, followed by the revelation that it too had ceased development, has many believing that Entrada Interactive has either recently disbanded or is in the process of doing so.

It’s In Limbo.

While the developers have not officially announced that Miscreated would no longer be developed, the closure of the official servers, coupled with the fact that no new content has been added to the game since May 2020, indicates that Miscreated is no longer in development and that Entrada Interactive itself may no longer exist as more than words on paper.

Official Servers.

Miscreated’s official servers went offline almost towards the end of 2022; because of this, the remaining community appears to have rallied around two “unofficial official servers”, which, for some reason, are allowed to designate themselves as being the official servers of Miscreated without intervention by the developers, something which could cause them legal headaches in future.

Second Best, At Best.

Miscreated, since its inception, has always been the less fun, less polished, and less interesting cousin of DayZ, and now, looking back after its journey is over, being a worse version of DayZ is the only thing that Miscreated consistently achieved throughout its early access journey and short life as a fully released title.

While Miscreated is not a terrible game, and it had a few promising moments during its journey, for the most part, it has never come close to offering the type of high-quality experience that DayZ was known for, even during the bleakest periods of DayZ’s tumultuous early access journey.

No Real Singleplayer.

While players can host a multiplayer game and allow only themselves to connect, Miscreated was created to be a multiplayer experience.

While there are AI threats, they pose little threat to even a moderately well-geared player. Solo players will quickly grow bored of exploring Miscreated’s bland world and dealing with its narratively and literally brain-dead zombies.

In addition, as a socially oriented game, much of what made Miscreated enjoyable (playing with others) is, of course, not an option when playing solo.

Radiation Storms.

While Miscreated is not the only game to feature storms, Miscreated does it better than the competition, and being caught in one of Miscreated’s radiation storms is genuinely intense as visibility drops and your character begins slowly dying due to exposure.

In addition, for those that escape the storm, the danger is not over, and drinking water that you were carrying during the storm will result in radiation poisoning, a welcome immersive feature in an otherwise bland title.

Terrible UI.

Miscreated has probably the worst user interface of any game I have played and is arguably worse than many “introduction to user interfaces” projects that are a dime a dozen on a wide variety of online course websites.

From poor font choice and misaligned text to the overall low-quality appearance of almost every aspect of its design, Miscreated’s UI feels like the work of someone who either hates making user-facing code or who has not done so since the early days of the internet.

Scarce Loot.

While I understand survival games need to be difficult to be enjoyable, there needs to be some sense of progression, and walking for 40+ minutes and searching around a dozen locations only to leave empty-handed feels terrible. While some unofficial servers have improved loot spawns, as a general rule, Miscreated’s world feels empty and unrewarding to explore.

Final Verdict.

Even when it was being actively developed Miscreated was a difficult game to recommend due a multitude of factors.

Now that it appears to be no longer in development,  I cannot recommend it in good conscience when titles like DayZ, Scum and 7 Days to Die offer a much better experience for a similar price point.

5/10

Is Miscreated Worth Playing?

We found Miscreated to be a mediocre game, meaning that while it has some redeeming qualities, it's held back by noticeable flaws that prevent it from being truly enjoyable.
